Grenada Band Achieves All Superiors at All Festivals

The 2010-2011 school year marked another productive year of achievements for Grenada Band. Marching, concert, and symphonic bands boasted successful accomplishments, as well as, individual members were honored with all-state Lions Band selection.

This year’s awards began in October with marching band competition in the District II Marching Band Festival in which Grenada High School Band made all superior ratings. Marching band successes continued as the Grenada Band also made all superior ratings and won Best in Class honors at the Eagles Nest Invitational in Suwanee, Georgia, and also at the United States Scholastic Band Association sanctioned Southern States Championship in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Spring concert season was also a time of continued achievement for Grenada Band. The Grenada High School Symphonic Winds participated in the Mississippi High School Activities Association sanctioned State Band Evaluation in March. The band was a Sweepstakes Winner receiving all superior ratings by every judge in Concert and Sight-Reading.

The statewide Dr. Joe Barry Mullins Band Festival hosted in Grenada on March 25 and 26 provided a venue for success for the 7th, 8th, and High School Concert Bands. Each entity gave an outstanding performance, with each receiving all superior ratings in Concert and Sight-Reading. This festival provides a venue for middle school bands and high school second bands to perform before a panel of judges and receive ratings in a setting similar to that State Festival. The judges provide helpful comments that each director may use to help improve the band’s playing ability.

The exemplary achievements of individual band members have also been recognized by their inclusion in the all-state Lions Band. Director of Bands Barry Rogers states, “These students have gone beyond the call of duty in representing the Grenada Band program. They have spent countless hours practicing in preparation of auditioning for this band.” Students selected last year for Lions Band traveled to Australia and this summer the band will perform in Seattle, Washington. This year’s band members representing the Grenada School District are: Leeanna Meadows – Color Guard, Jonathan Tanner – Trumpet, Karen Chan – 2 years as Dancer, Mary Kate Livingston- 2 years in Color Guard, and Madison Gettys – 4 years as Dancer.

The 2010-11 school year has been another year of achievements and recognition for Grenada Band. “Band members, parents, and directors should be commended for the completion of an exemplary year,” states Superintendent Dr. David Daigneault. “The receipt of all superiors is an indication of their dedication to the program.”

Rogers says, “We are extremely proud of the hard work and commitment of all students in every grade in the program. For every band to make all superior ratings at all festivals and contests is quite an accomplishment.”
