LIONS CLUB JOINS AMERICORPS AND ELIZABETH JONES LIBRARY IN AFTER SCHOOL READING PROGRAMS
By Pamela Hubbard
Assistant AmeriCorps Director
The Lions Club International has formally initiated the Reading In Action program as part of their service mission that already included their sight and hearing efforts. The Grenada Lions Club eye screens the lower elementary students every year in order to alert school nurses and parents as to whether a child may have some eyesight problem and need further testing. Correcting eyesight issues will help children read. Reading is especially important, whether its reading school lessons or reading for enjoyment with books from the library.
Crystal Osborne, Director of the Elizabeth Jones Library, recently updated the Lions Club about library facilities. To fulfill the Lions Reading In Action mission, Ms. Osborne encouraged them to work with AmeriCorps after school reading programs. The Lions will be eye screening the school children the week of November 12 – 14, and will present their first after school reading program on Tuesday, November 13, from 4 – 5 p.m. AmeriCorps members will be at the Elizabeth Jones Library to assist the Lions as they present stories and activities about “Manners.” Early in November, a notice will be sent home with students. We ask parents to register children for the program to ensure that there are enough goodie bags for each child present. Parents must attend the reading program with their child or children.
Other service clubs have sponsored reading programs in the past by providing treats for the goodie bags. The Exchange Club presented its first program on “Anti-Bullying” as related to their child abuse mission in October. AmeriCorps and the Elizabeth Jones Library welcome other service organizations to plan and present a reading program. AmeriCorps members will be on hand to help with the children.
AmeriCorps originally presented two programs a year, but students and parents asked for more. Now there is a program the second Tuesday of each month from September until May, with the exception of the Dr. Seuss After School Reading Program which will be on Thursday, February 28.
The Elizabeth Jones Library presents its Summer Reading Program in June and July. Look for the school notices about the reading programs. For more information about the upcoming Lions Club after school reading or other programs, call Pamela Hubbard at the AmeriCorps office – 226-1606.
