NJROTC/NNDCC Volunteer Awards
The Grenada High School NJROTC/NNDCC (Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps/Navy National Defense Cadet Corps) not only trains students in skills necessary for a career in the armed forces, it also trains students in leadership and humanitarian services. Students in the GHS NJROTC/NNDCC chapter have busy this school year implementing all of these important skills.
Approximately 40 cadets put their physical training exercises in to play during a recent visit to Camp McCain’s base confidence course. Students were asked to complete 15 obstacles on the course that included crawling on the ground under wire, scaling a rope wall, and climbing over, under, and across logs. With the help of NSI Chief Reese Foreman and Mr. Matt Howell, GHS faculty member, the cadets gained self-confidence as they negotiated the tough obstacle course. After completion of the course, students enjoyed lunch then tried their marksmanship skills at the base’s electronic rifle range. Students used M-4 and M-16 simulators to shoot at virtual targets. As they became more comfortable with the electronic weapons, their level of proficiency increased. Thanks to Camp McCain for welcoming the GHS cadets for the second year in a row.
Students enrolled in the NJROTC/NNDCC program have also completed many hours of community service this school year. Each time the unit has been asked for assistance or to perform at an event, the cadets in the program have answered the call. Students assisted a homeless veteran and his family move into their new home, and they also helped provide food, clothing and support to the family during this transition. Students have provided support for other homeless veterans by fundraising for Crusaders for Veterans. Through other efforts, cadets have assisted approximately 12 homeless veterans and their families into new homes and kept them from losing homes. They have also participated in local Adopt-a-Highway efforts.
Through community service and humanitarian efforts, Grenada High School NJROTC/NNDCC has proven that its students maintain high standards of volunteerism. These students have gone above and beyond the call of duty towards their community. NSI Chief Foreman stated, “These students embody leadership and humanitarianism in this community. Their efforts and willingness to work and volunteer have made my job much easier over the course of the last year.“
The students’ volunteer efforts have not just been recognized locally. The Veteran Resource Award has also seen the tremendous effort put forth by these cadets. After thorough examination, the Veteran Resource Award has seen fit to honor the GHS program with the following awards:
- Student Volunteer Team of the Year (awarded to the entire GHS NJROTC/NNDCC program
- Senior Student Volunteer of the Year - Senior Cadet Portia Fox
- Junior Student Volunteer of the Year - Junior Cadet Hansen Bennett
According to Chief Foreman, Cadets Fox and Hansen will each receive $1000 scholarships for their volunteer efforts. Plaques will be awarded to these students as well. Congratulations to Chief Foreman and the GHS NJROTC/NNDCC cadets on their superb volunteer efforts and awards!Stephanie Raper
