NNDCC Spring Break Trip
The Grenada Navy National Defense Cadet Corps traveled to Gulfport, Mississippi and Pensacola, Florida over spring break to tour two National Guard bases and two Navy bases. The cadets began their journey at Camp Shelby National Guard base in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. While visiting Camp Shelby they viewed various tanks and aircraft used by the National Guard. The cadets then journeyed to the Gulfport Navy Seabee base where they explored the training facilities the base has for new Seabees.
Navy Seabees are members of the United States Naval Construction Forces. The cadets spoke with and learned from students in various Seabee classes. These students shared with cadets the requirements involved in becoming Navy builders, welders, construction mechanics, equipment operators, plumbers, and electricians. While at the base cadets were able to experience firsthand some of the newest equipment used by the Navy. They also received the rare honor of meeting the Commanding Officer and the Command Master Chief of the training school, which has over 500 students from the Navy, Army, and Air Force. The Commanding Officer and Master Chief shared anecdotes about their naval careers and how they were able to reach their current rank and title.
The cadets experienced military barracks’ life as they slept overnight in the bunk beds in the barracks at the National Guard base in Gulfport. The barracks are where active duty, retired and National Guard members live. Cadets also had a chance to eat at two galleys on two different bases during their trip, where they experienced the delights of true military dining.
Another highlight of the trip occurred as the cadets visited the Pensacola Naval Air Museum. The Air Museum boasts more than 150 beautifully restored aircraft, hands-on exhibits, and more than 4,000 artifacts representing Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard aviation.
Cadets also enjoyed a motion-based air combat simulator and an ultimate seven-story giant screen movie of D-Day in the IMAX Theater. Cadets enjoyed a meal in the Cubi Bar Café, an exhibit within itself. In addition to the military attractions, cadets also enjoyed normal teenage distractions such as shopping on base and off base at various malls. The cadets eagerly look forward to next year’s trip.
